Upgraded from economy to business on a Jet Airways flight from BOM to LHR last year. When it comes to flight upgrades, the airlines are caught in what is viewed by many to be a real Catch-22. Like any business, the airlines have an obligation to maximize revenue and make money for the company. Opt to take a flight during a less popular time, and even if you don’t secure an upgrade, you may be lucky enough to have empty seats beside you in economy. Don’t get me wrong — when I am filing past the first few rows of seats on my way to the back of the plane, those big leather seats with folks already drinking wine in them have a strong allure.
